A bridge between worlds

As an ESC volunteer in migration and integration, you work alongside people who have just arrived in a new country β€” refugees, asylum seekers, unaccompanied minors, EU citizens in vulnerable situations. You help them navigate authorities, learn the language, find their new everyday life.

Migration & integration

Migration is one of Europe's biggest social questions β€” and one of the most meaningful areas to work in. ESC projects exist in reception centres, asylum housing, youth homes for unaccompanied minors, integration centres and organisations working with undocumented people.

The work is concrete and varied: language cafΓ©s, homework help for children, basic legal information, leisure activities, women's groups, rights awareness. Many projects are run by NGOs working alongside public systems, but also by churches, trade unions and municipal centres.

Projects involving refugee reception often require specific supervision β€” you work with people who have sometimes experienced trauma, and the organisation provides ongoing support. You are not expected to be a therapist. You are expected to be a present human being.
