For a planet that holds

As an ESC volunteer in environment and sustainability, you work on climate issues, nature conservation, organic farming or circular economy. You become part of Europe's green transition β€” in nature reserves, on organic farms, in environmental organisations or in cities running sustainability projects.

Environment & sustainability

This area has grown significantly in recent years. ESC projects exist in nature conservation (forest management, wetland restoration, bird monitoring), organic farming (farms hosting WWOOF-style volunteers), environmental education (centres hosting school classes), climate activism (NGOs and advocacy organisations) and sustainable urban development.

Many projects are based in rural areas, sometimes in remote regions β€” something to be aware of. It means close contact with nature, but also that you may be quite isolated from larger cities and nightlife. Those seeking authentic rural experience will feel at home; those wanting urban energy should look for city-based projects.

The work is often physical β€” you plant, dig, prune, observe, document. You learn new techniques and gain practical knowledge you can take with you.

What you actually do

🌳

Planting, clearing, biotope restoration, bird surveys, monitoring of protected species.

🌾

Organic farming

Learn permaculture, agroecology and sustainable farming through practical work on farms and gardens.

🐝

Biodiversity

Support projects on bees, butterflies, small birds β€” surveys, habitat creation, public events.

πŸ“’

Environmental education

Lead educational activities for school classes and the public at nature centres or outdoor schools.

Practical information

Duration

Wide variation. Short seasonal projects (2–3 months during harvest or planting) exist alongside year-long projects. Think about season when applying.

Languages

English is enough in many international environmental projects. On smaller organic farms, basic local language can be more important.

Requirements

No formal requirements. But physical ability, a driving licence (sometimes) and stability in rural settings are pluses. Consider allergies (bees, hay, sun).

Environment & sustainability

Work concretely on climate, biodiversity, organic farming and sustainable communities.
